Hello from Halve Maen

Dear Dutch - NYC Tech Community,

For the past 1,5 years at the Consulate, it has been a pleasure meeting many of you and hearing about your adventures in the tech space. In this 3rd edition of the Halve Maen
newsletter, I would like to share with you the three biggest challenges I have seen Dutch startups face in their expansion to New York City.
  1. Acquiring the right people: Whilst New York City is definitely not short of a workforce, finding suitable people for your business can be an obstacle - make sure to talk to (Dutch) entrepreneurs who have experienced this process.
  2. The difference in business culture between the Netherlands and the US is bigger than many people expect. In the US, time is money, which means meetings and negotiations are much shorter than in the Netherlands. Moreover, have your product and pitch up to American standards - make sure your online presence is of high quality both visually and linguistically.
  3. It is extremely difficult to find a good balance between operating both your business back home in the Netherlands as well as in New York City - make sure you are comfortable "leaving" the home front behind.

Look forward to seeing you soon!
